Markdown Toolkit

Markdown to plain text converter

Strip the formatting symbols from Markdown and keep just the words. Headings, paragraphs, list items and table rows each end up on their own line.

How to use the Markdown to text converter

  1. Upload your .md file, or paste your Markdown.
  2. Choose Plain text as the format.
  3. Download the .txt file, or copy it from the preview.

What stays intact

  • All the words, in the same order
  • Each heading, paragraph and list item on its own line
  • Table rows on separate lines
  • No ##, ** or other symbols left behind
  • Links shown as their text

About the Markdown to text converter

When to use it

Use it when the symbols get in the way: pasting into an email or a form that does not understand Markdown, counting words, checking spelling, or feeding clean text to another tool.

What is removed

Formatting marks such as # for headings, ** for bold, backticks for code and the brackets around links disappear. Links keep their visible text, and the address itself is dropped.

What is kept

The words and their order are untouched. Blank lines separate paragraphs, so the result still reads naturally. Tables lose their lines but each row stays on its own line.

Need formatting instead?

If you want a formatted document rather than bare text, convert to PDF, Word or HTML instead.

Frequently asked questions

Does it keep the line breaks?
Paragraphs, headings, list items and table rows each start on a new line, with a blank line between paragraphs.
What happens to links and images?
Links keep their visible text. Images, which have no text, are left out.
Can I paste instead of uploading?
Yes. Use the Paste Markdown tab and your text never needs to be saved as a file first.
